Santa Claus and the smile

The fire is blazing in the stove of Santa’s chamber at the Arctic Circle. The atmosphere in the room is cosy and warm no matter how The Frost is scratching the corners. Mr Frost is very happy because the winter has come. Now it is his right and duty to make cold and blow icy winter winds! He especially likes to dash past Santa’s chamber– Santa Claus and Mrs Santa are good friends of his. However, once when Mr Frost slashed with his icy nails so that a little crack was seen in the log wall of Santa Claus’ chamber,  Mrs Santa became a little angry and that is not usual at all!  She always seems to be happy and in a good mood. Nevertheless, she relented quite soon, when Mr Frost created beautiful ice flowers onto the surfaces of all windows.

Santa Claus is sitting in his easy chair. He is pondering something. Every now and then a sound of little bells and stomping of footsteps can be heard: the elves are doing their preparation tasks for coming Christmas. But even when there is busy bustle all around, there’s also calmness. We are now beyond the border of hurry. There is enough time, no hurry at all. Although every day many people from all over the world visit Santa Claus and his village, he always finds time to muse in his thoughts. The time of Santa Claus is not like the time of ours. His time is elastic and flexible. He has time for all and everything like taking a nap when he needs it. That is why he has time to bring presents everywhere in the world during a single Christmas Eve night. All is done, and always has been done, in good and proper time, no hurry, no rushing.

Santa Claus is fingering his beard. He is thinking of the smiles he has gotten from people who have visited him. Usually he gets at least one smile from everybody. He would like to deliver those smiles all over the world. First and foremost he would like to bring those smiles to the places where there are worries and fears in  people’s minds. Santa Claus knows that a smile is important. A good, sincere smile may lead to good, sincere deeds, too.

But how could he get these smiles delivered everywhere? The smiles can not be packed or put into a sack. But then Santa Claus can sense some visitors coming  - his right or left little toe is itching -  and he must leave his thoughts to simmer in the big porridge-pot of unfinished thoughts.

Santa Claus returns to these thoughts in the evening, after returning home to Korvatunturi mountain. When he is lounging in his favourite sofa, a joyful thought full of Christmas spirit springs into his mind. The thought has been sent by little Anna. She is making a gingerbread house at her home and thinking of Christmas and Santa Claus. Santa Claus gets an idea. The children are always able to send their thoughts to him. So, surely he, Santa Claus, could send his thought-messages to them, too. Without wasting time he begins to think of all those smiles he has seen during his long, long life and begins to send them into the dreams of  the coming night.  And so it happens that next morning children all over the world are waking up with peaceful minds and smiling faces.
